Black the color of Power?

  • Does the color Black evoke a sense of power? It truly is a bold statement especially when combined with bright bold colors. To some Black and the combinded Dark Greys provoke a feeling of sophistication, a bit of mystic mixed with some mystery. Many may feel it is a lonely “down” color by itself, lacking any feeling or depth. It is a amazing how this so called color, can charge people’s emotions on so many different levels.

I love this quote:

“I fell in love with black; it contained all color. It wasn’t a negation of colorBlack is the most aristocratic color of all… You can be quiet, and it contains the whole thing.” (Louise Nevelson)

One of my other favorite quotes:

“I wear the black for the poor and the beaten down, / Livin’ in the hopeless, hungry side of town, / I wear it for the prisoner who has long paid for his crime, / But is there because he’s a victim of the times.” — Johnny Cash

Then you have the quote that is as simple as the color black itself:

“Black is not a color.” (Edouard Manet)

Black and Grey design may seem simple and dull but I definitly disagree. It is believed that by using these two color, one can strip the creation down to it’s rawest form allowing the overall design to speak for itself and not have to rely on other colors to enhance.

The challenge lies in the balance of the voids. Too much black and not enough empty space creates chaos and just a big mess. By using variation of brush/pen/line thickness the design give the viewer a break to appreciate the layout and the direction the design takes you.

My conclusion…do not overlook the importance of the color black. It can hold more power in your daily life as it can in design.
