I love this quote:
“I fell in love with black; it contained all color. It wasn’t a negation of color… Black is the most aristocratic color of all… You can be quiet, and it contains the whole thing.” (Louise Nevelson)
One of my other favorite quotes:
“I wear the black for the poor and the beaten down, / Livin’ in the hopeless, hungry side of town, / I wear it for the prisoner who has long paid for his crime, / But is there because he’s a victim of the times.” — Johnny Cash
Then you have the quote that is as simple as the color black itself:
“Black is not a color.” (Edouard Manet)
The challenge lies in the balance of the voids. Too much black and not enough empty space creates chaos and just a big mess. By using variation of brush/pen/line thickness the design give the viewer a break to appreciate the layout and the direction the design takes you.
My conclusion…do not overlook the importance of the color black. It can hold more power in your daily life as it can in design.
